All Saint’s Anglican Church Donnybrook reaching out to the Community

The outbreak of the corona virus Covid-19 pandemic which has swept the world has impacted people in varying ways. Apart from the obvious health risk, some people may have been affected by reduced work hours or lost their full time work. The effect on families can be quite devastating both financially and emotionally, causing stress and uncertainty.

All Saints Anglican Church in Donnybrook has a proud history of community outreach and emergency relief programs. The Parish quickly recognised that children, families, seniors and backpackers needed our help during the pandemic. With community knowledge and contacts including Boniface Care (Bunbury Anglican Diocese), Bunbury Foodbank, Donnybrook IGA, Licciardello & Son Orchards and the generosity of many parishioners who contributed from their own farms and cupboards. We were able to increase significantly the number of our regular food hampers available and offer immediate assistance to those in need. This also included fuel vouchers, IGA vouchers, Foodbank vouchers, medical and rental assistance.

As people started to become isolated and unable to leave their homes, the services grew quickly to adapt and Reverend Cathie Broome together with a local retired priest, a school chaplain and parishioners created “small army of parishioners” who gathered in the hall of All Saint’s Church to make up bundles of fruit and vegetables and then delivered them to those in need. Some parishioners were able to donate fruit, vegetables and money and we were also most grateful for the generous support and donation of fruit, vegetables and money and we were most grateful for the generous support from our local contacts and volunteers.

We as a church recognize there are still many people in need and we want to reassure our community that we are here, our doors are open and we are ready to lend support to people needing assistance. From early November we will be commencing a regular Saturday sausage sizzle and emergency relief morning with the aim of providing a safe, welcoming place that people can come to access assistance and support. This is in addition to the weekly options currently available. The aim is to assist the wonderful work of local agencies not replace them but to assist with any gaps in the services and to make sure that no one goes hungry and all are cared for in our local community.

Many of us within the parish recognise how fortunate we are and feel blessed and grateful that we had the opportunity to reach out to our local community during such a challenging time. Mission, pastoral care and giving is an important part of our church vision. We feel truly blessed to be part of such a wonderful community where when times are tough we are able to come together to “pitch in” and care for one another.

It is indeed commendable how small communities support each other and those in need.
